1. Garoda Beach, Watamu

Garoda Beach is not just another beach; it's an experience waiting to be explored. Nestled in the heart of Watamu, this beach is an absolute masterpiece, characterized by its unique sandbar that forms during low tide. The almost blinding white sand and the shimmering shades of blue of the waters make it a sight to behold. But there's more to Garoda Beach than just its natural beauty.

A Day at the Beach:
Upon reaching the beach, you'll notice several "shade tents" dotting the shoreline. These tents, complete with sunbeds, are set up by friendly locals who are always ready with a smile. For a small fee, you can rent one of these shaded spots, perfect for lounging and taking in the view. And if you're feeling thirsty or peckish, these locals also offer a variety of drinks and even food orders.

For those who prefer a more upscale dining experience, the renowned KOBE RESORT is just a short walk away. Here, you can indulge in a sumptuous lunch, enjoy refreshing drinks, or opt for quick and easy sandwiches if you're on the go.

Tides and Activities:
Garoda Beach is known for its changing tides, which occur twice daily. The landscape of the beach transforms with the high and low tides, offering a unique experience each time. For the best beach experience, aim to visit during low tide, ideally about 2 hours before and after the lowest point. Remember, the timing shifts by an hour each day.

While the beach is predominantly sandy, you'll find a few corals scattered here and there, adding to its charm.

For adventure enthusiasts, Garoda Beach is a popular spot for kitesurfing. Whether you're a seasoned kitesurfer or a newbie looking to learn, the JC Kiteschool is the place to be. They offer top-notch Duotone equipment for rent and provide lessons for those eager to master the sport!

Getting There:
Finding your way to Garoda Beach is simple. As you navigate through the town, keep an eye out for signs pointing towards "KOBE RESORT". Following this sign will lead you down a picturesque sandy path for about 100 meters. As you walk, you'll be greeted by local artisans showcasing their handcrafted African wares, a testament to the rich culture and artistry of the region.

2. Short Beach , Watamu

Tucked away amidst Watamu's more bustling beaches, 4. Short Beach: Watamu's Tranquil Retreat.

This hidden gem is easily accessible, though if you're arriving by bike, a word of caution: the path is laden with soft sand, which can prove a bit challenging for riders.

What sets Short Beach apart is its peaceful ambiance.,you're greeted with untouched beauty, especially during low tide when the beach reveals its full splendor. The calm waters, combined with the beach's natural positioning, often shield it from the winds, making it an ideal spot for relaxation or a peaceful swim.

One of the highlights of Short Beach is its proximity to Garoda Beach. At low tide, visitors can embark on a scenic walk along the shoreline, reaching Garoda Beach in just about 15-20 minutes. This walk not only connects two beautiful beaches but also offers a chance to witness the coastal wonders that Watamu has in store.

In conclusion, if you're in search of a beach that offers both tranquility and the opportunity for a gentle adventure, coupled with a mesmerizing sunset view
, Short Beach should be high on your list. Whether you're laying back and enjoying the calm, taking that picturesque walk to Garoda, or capturing the sunset at the Litchhouse, this beach promises a unique Watamu experience.

WHAT'S AROUND: Close to Short Beach, there's the Litchhouse. It's the place everyone goes to watch the sunset. People meet up here, have drinks, and enjoy the view as the sun goes down. It's a fun spot to hang out.

Not far from there, in the mangroves, is Temple Point. They have a spa that's really nice. If you want to relax and feel good, you should go there. It's peaceful with the sounds of nature all around.

3. Love Island ( Isola dell'Amore) & 7 Island Beach

Nestled in the heart of Watamu lies the enchanting Love Island, also known as 7 Island Beach. As the name suggests, this coastal gem comprises seven picturesque islets, each offering its own unique charm.

Surrounded by crystalline waters, these islets are adorned with lush vegetation and rocky outcrops, creating a perfect backdrop for romantic getaways and tranquil retreats.

During low tide, the surrounding waters recede to unveil sandy walkways, allowing visitors to hop from one islet to another, discovering hidden coves and secluded spots. The proximity to the coral reef makes it a haven for snorkelers, with the vibrant marine life of the Indian Ocean on full display.

But it's not just the beauty of the islands that captivates visitors; it's the feeling of being in a world apart, where time slows down, and nature's wonders take center stage. Whether you're watching the sunrise paint the sky or feeling the gentle caress of the ocean breeze, Love Island / 7 Island Beach promises an experience that lingers in the heart long after the footprints in the sand have faded.

Getting There:

Reaching Love Island / 7 Island Beach in Watamu is straightforward. If you're relying on local transportation, simply ask any driver to take you there. For those driving themselves, input "Willy Beach" into your maps. This popular beach club and restaurant not only serves as a great landmark but also offers public access to the beach.

For visitors seeking a more upscale experience, consider accessing the beach through renowned beach resorts like "Tamu Restaurant" or "Papa Remo Beach". These spots offer a blend of luxury and the natural beauty of the beach. For an even more secluded and private beach experience, "Visiwa Resort" is the place to be. With its private beach access, guests can enjoy an exclusive slice of this stunning beach, complemented by breathtaking views.

Please Note:

You might see some algae near the shore in drone photos. Don't worry! Just walk a bit further, and you'll be on a beautiful beach. Remember, the look of Watamu's beaches changes with the tides, which happen two times a day. To check the tides, click here.

4. Jacaranda Bay: A Slice of Paradise  also known as "Sardegna 2 "

Just a 15-minute drive from the center of Watamu, Jacaranda Bay awaits, offering a serene escape from the bustling Watamu. While not a town in itself, Jacaranda boasts a variety of beach clubs and restaurants, making it a delightful spot to savor a meal and soak in the sun.

Visitors should be mindful of the first 100 meters of the beach, which is dotted with corals. Especially during low tide, it's essential to tread carefully.

However, what truly draws people to Jacaranda Bay is its stunning stretch of white sand, a sight that has become a magnet for tourists and boat tours alike.

Whether you're looking to relax on the pristine sands, enjoy a boat tour, or simply indulge in some local cuisine by the beach, Jacaranda Bay promises a memorable experience.

Getting There:

Reaching Jacaranda Bay is a breeze. Located just a 15-minute drive from central Watamu, it's easily accessible by car or taxi. If you're unfamiliar with the area, simply ask local drivers for "Sardegna Due" or any of the popular beach clubs in Jacaranda. You can go straight to "Safina Beach" they have beds, restaurant and drinks.

Please Note:

While at Jacaranda Bay, you'll likely encounter many "beach boys" - local artists showcasing their crafts and wares. They're generally friendly and eager to share their work. However, if you'd prefer not to be approached, it's okay to kindly let them know you're not interested and ask them not to be too "pushy." They understand and will respect your wishes.

5. Watamu Bay Beach

Watamu Bay, also known as Mapango Beach, is the vibrant "city beach" of Watamu, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into local life. As the sun begins its descent, the beach bursts into life. The laughter of children fills the air as they gather for spirited sunset football matches. Nearby, fishermen expertly navigate their boats to the shore, their day's catch in tow.

But it's not just about the local charm. Watamu Bay is also home to some of the area's best beach clubs and restaurants. For those with a penchant for Italian cuisine, and chill vibes "Sunset Beach Watamu" is a must-visit, boasting incredible pizzas and a range of delectable Italian dishes. If you're in the mood for something more exotic, head over to "KOKOMO Beach" for a taste of fusion Lebanese cuisine.

In essence, Watamu Bay (Mapango Beach) is where the heart of the community meets the allure of the coast, creating a unique blend of culture, cuisine, and coastal beauty. Whether you're immersing yourself in local activities or indulging in culinary delights, this beach promises a memorable experience.

6. Turtle Bay Beach

Turtle Bay Beach stands out in Watamu not just for its natural beauty, but also for the comfort of having top-tier resorts right at its doorstep. It houses the family-friendly Turtle Bay Resort, the luxurious Hemmingway’s Watamu, the ever-popular Ocean Sports Resort, where you can enjoy food and drinks, right on the beach. and the refined Medina Palms. Its long sandy/corals stretch is a snorkeler's delight, offering sights of rays, octopus, moray eels, and a plethora of colorful fish. However, during winter, the beach often sees a lining of seaweed.

Our tips: While Turtle Bay Beach offers a magnificent view, it might not be the top choice for those seeking a pure "sun gazing" experience or uninterrupted relaxation on the sand. For that, Garoda Beach ( if you fancy a scenic walk, Garoda Beach is just a 15-minute stroll away during low tide)  is our preferred recommendation.
